An estimated 4% of patients with hemolytic anemia experience reactive thrombocytosis, but the connection is more complex than a simple cause-and-effect. When red blood cells are destroyed prematurely, the body's response can trigger a cascade of events that ultimately leads to an elevated platelet count. This phenomenon is known as reactive or secondary thrombocytosis.
